On Reading and Writing Poetry

I read another’s poetry

      that clutches the heart

      shimmers with truth-telling

wondering what thing of beauty

      will be left behind     

      when I have left

Not so much I fear

      as what I’ve loved

      leaping from the pages of

      clear-eyed dreamers:

Robert Frost  Walt Whitman…

I  grope and stumble in the dark

seeking to understand

      to share
      to set down in words
      that soar like eagles

some flash of wisdom

some notion of grace

      that might yet,

      in the twilight of my years

still make a difference.
