            Sometimes In The Night

Sometimes in the night

I awake with a start

   —then hear it again
   the sound that woke me.

Out on the black sea

a whale is tail slapping

   pectoral slamming or

   throwing its great body

into vibrating air

defying gravity 

    —then crashing down again.

   No one knows exactly

why they do it…

I’ve heard many explanations.

    To me it’s clear

    the whale is declaring

   

I’m here I’m here—

letting me know

              I’m not the only one

    alive and searching

                 

             For sweet connection

             love and purpose—

                on this planet spinning

                through the deep dark night.
