Voice of the Sea

Voice of the Sea

Sometimes the sea murmurs
    whispering secrets
    that defy understanding—

Sometimes the sea roars
    seemingly determined
    to crash through indifference—

Sometimes the sea sings
    lullabies love songs operas
    holding us sweetly enthralled—

Sometimes the sea sighs
     sending out supplications
     and waves of sorrow—

The sea knows who it is.
    mother father sister brother
source of life and sweet abundance—

Do we know who we are
    timid bystanders
    bearing silent witness—

To oceans choked with plastic
    fouled with waste
    slicked with oil spills?

If not me, If not you,
    if not all of us
rising up like a great tsunami

    to protest and protect,
    then who—who will be
the voice of the dying sea?
