Conscious Gardening
My happiness depends
on the thoughts I choose to think—
or not think.
Like weeds in my garden,
thorny thoughts pop up
from time to time.
Some have deep roots,
resist being dug up
and spread stealthy vines.
I must be vigilant and
protect my precious flowers
my delicate sprouts.
You see, I prefer plants
that nourish body and soul—
bringing peace and contentment.
When invaders attack (and attack they will),
I know I must root them out
and cultivate better thoughts.
Where is the beauty in this day?
Can I send compassion
to someone sunk in darkness?
Can I banish fear or anger
with heartfelt gratitude?
Can I smile even through my tears?
Time to take stock
of what’s growing
in my inner garden.
What’s growing in yours?
(Make no mistake;
we are all gardeners.)
We can overrun the world with sunflowers,
Uplifting those in need—
or allow weeds to choke our joy.
Today, I’ll plant seeds of happiness;
water with love
feed with hope—
then, weed diligently.
